Dental technology has had a long line of advances on the road away from wooden teeth and one of the most exciting of those advances is CEREC. CEREC – which is short for CEramic REConstruction – is a system by which ceramic crowns and partial crowns can be designed, produced, and placed in the dental office, so suitable cases can be completed in one scheduled treatment visit. An assessment, additional treatment, or follow-up appointments may still be required, depending on your tooth.
How Does It Work
The process begins when the dentist scans the area that requires work. That scan is transferred to a computer which uses software to design a restoration tailored to the patient’s tooth and surrounding teeth. Once the design is complete, it is sent to an in-office milling unit, where the crown is shaped from a block of dental restorative material. Then the dentist checks the fit, appearance, and bite before placing the crown, which for suitable cases can happen during the same visit.

Benefits
The benefits of CEREC are numerous. Because a digital scan captures the information used to design the crown, a conventional impression tray is not needed for that step. The time needed depends on your treatment plan and the work involved, and our team will explain the expected appointment length when scheduling your treatment. When the crown is completed the same day, there is no temporary crown to wear and no separate placement appointment.
Tooth-coloured ceramic can be shaded to blend with your natural teeth, and an all-ceramic crown has no metal edge that could show near the gumline. Your dentist will recommend a material suited to the tooth and your bite.
Same-day CEREC crowns are available at Pickering Square Dental for suitable cases. If you have a cracked tooth or other issue normally solved by a crown or partial crown, ask us whether a same-day crown may be appropriate for you.
